The guideline are not mean to paint a picture thatthe Catholic Churchnow prefers cremation over burial of the trunk , as that is n’t the case . In fact , they stanch from earlier sepulture instructions published in 1963 , when the Holy Office established " Piam et Constantem , " which established that Catholics should be buried with veneration and that cremation was n’t " oppose per se to the Christian organized religion . " As such , those who were cremated could still receive the sacraments and funeral rites as long as their determination to be cremated was not an indication of their " self-abnegation of Christian tenet , the animus of a hush-hush society , or hatred of the Catholic organized religion and the Church , " the " Piam et Constantem " read , according to a statement by the Vatican .

Even so , according to the Vatican , cremation practice adverse to the Christian faith have popped up . As a result , the raw guideline are meant to emphasize that the Catholic Church ’s preference is for the remains of Christians to be buried and , to state instructions for conserving the ashes when cremation is chosen . Catholic believe that the soul is immortal and does not depend on the physical consistency . Since cremation of the gone ’s remains do not affect his or her soulfulness , harmonise to the Church , there are no doctrinal objections to the practice . ( As a side note , even some magisterial scholars are ponderingthe existence of a soulfulness , and what that soul might look like . )

As for why the ashes should n’t be scattered , in the eyes of the Church , such an action could suggest the impression in another form of a god . " In order that every appearance of pantheism , realism or nihilism be nullify , it is not permitted to break up the ash of the close set off in the air , on land , at sea or in some other way , nor may they be carry on in mementos , pieces of jewellery or other objects , " the statement reads .

If these guidelines are n’t followed , the Church will abnegate funeral rites , fit in to the statement . " When the deceased notoriously has requested cremation and the sprinkle of their ashes for reasons contrary to the Christian trust , a Christian funeral must be denied to that person fit in to the average of the law of nature , " the statement reads .
