The set ofNight Courtis all too familiar to John Larroquette.

The 76-year-old actor, who starred in the original NBC sitcom from 1984 to 1992, has returned to the role of Dan Fielding in the revival series.

“There’s elation because there’s this new crop of people, and then there’s the sadness of remembering all those people that are no longer here,” he shared on set at Warner Bros. recently during this winter’s Television Critics Association conference.

Larroquette admits he can get “very” sentimental filming the revival, particularly in light of the losses of many of his former costars, includingCharlie RobinsonandMarkie Postin 2021 andRichard Molllast October.

“Because of the timing, Charlie Robinson died while we were doing the pilot. Markie died not that long after. Richard Moll died, what, three or four months ago now,” he recalls. “Harry [Anderson] diedin 2017 or ‘18, so that was a little more removed. But as I said, it’s like I see ghosts.”

Larroquette also says that he made an effort to include some of the original players in the NBC revival, including behind-the-scenes players. “I actually asked, ‘If you need a script supervisor, I know a good one,’” he recalls of recommending Susie Gunther.

During the original cast’s eight-year run, Larroquette says the stars forged a strong bond as they went through similar life experiences.

“We were all good friends. We spent time with each other and also because we were young, we were successful, everybody had babies,” he says, referring to both Post and Anderson. He and his wife Elizabeth also welcomed their youngest son, Benjamin, during the same time.

“We were just this family together, all of us. And we spent time off stage together a lot. So it was that — it was a family.”

Rauch, 43, said that certain set pieces — such as the couch in the judge’s chambers and the chairs in the cafeteria — “are from the original [set]. So every time I sit on them or walk into the courtroom — which was an exact recreation from the plans of the original — I get a little nostalgic heart zing.”
