NASAsaysit has captured aerial images of the Beresheet wreck site following Israel ’s failed lunar landing attempt last month .
The spacecraftmalfunctionedjust seconds before attempting to touch down at an ancient volcanic field known as Sea of Serenity , or Mare Serenitatis . NASA ’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter ( LRO ) captured the shock site photo on April 22 using a three - imager organisation .
Taken 90 kilometers ( 56 mile ) above the airfoil , the image show a 10 - metre - all-inclusive ( 33 - infantry - wide ) dark smudge that looks to be where Beresheet crashed . Its obscure feel is less reflective than a smooth surface , point an area that has been “ roughened ” due to something disturbing the surface of the moon .
infinite experts note that it is unclear whether Beresheet created a volcanic crater or just a small indenture on the aerofoil given its low angle of approach shot , unclouded wad , and low speed when compare to a meteorite of the same size .
