Over a decade into the 21st Century , our imaginations are captivated by creations of the 19th and 20th . Sherlock Holmes govern television and movies . We ’re eagerly awaiting new movies about James Bond , Captain Kirk , Superman , Batman and Spider - Man . Where are the 21st Century mass - metier heroes and villains ? Why is n’t anybody even trying to create them ?
Part of the resolution is that almost all of our in truth mainstream hero and monsters arose from pulpy mass media , created cheaply at the start of a musical genre ’s lifespan . To produce new jumbo heroes , you take a new pulp . And new genres .

Is Pulp Over ?
To some extent , this is because the medium landscape painting has changed so much in the preceding few tenner . medium companies have become much openhanded and more amalgamate , and most of those great well - hump characters are corporate IP . It ’s hard to understate the role of years of Happy Meal promotion and goggle box ads in making characters stick in your mind . Plus , with the rise of CG effect , any really epic hero is going to be expensive to create . So you take new cult icon to replace the old ones . And that , in twist , probably needs a new ethnic mo like the wage hike of superhero comics in the previous 1930s , or the Silver Age , or the rise of dime bag novels . Or a new form of serialized narrative , since epic sub often seem to thrive in serialisation . We need new pulp : cheap , pop , and look down upon by the tastemakers .
A Post - epic epoch ?
The alternative , of row , is to believe that we live in a post - larger-than-life era . There ’s for certain plenty of evidence of that — gloam is fundamentally a personal story , in which heroism is defined in terms of fight for your loved ones , rather than any heavy post . But I turn down to believe that we ’re no longer ready to believe in gallantry or sacrifice for a neat good — and the popularity of Harry Potter seems to prove otherwise .

At least , there was a plenty of talk at the time about how surprising it was that a children ’s book became such a Brobdingnagian mainstream phenomenon .
