If you catch someone speak about time crystals in a legal community , you ’d think they were mad , or drunk . Or both . These thing , theoretically , oscillate for eternity without any muscularity comment whatsoever — and if that sounds like a perpetual motion car , it ’s because it is . inconceivable , right ? But what if it was a Nobel trophy - winning physicists making the suggestion ?
Because that ’s exactly the situation we find ourselves in . As Wired report card , Frank Wilczek from MIT has taken the rather bold step of announcing to the world that he conceive time crystals could exist . It was n’t a decision he made thinly — it could well see him blackball by the wider scientific community — but after month of workplace , he settle there was nothing else for it . If they can do it — and neither they or Wilczek see why they should n’t be able-bodied to — the most basic theory of time could be always rewritten , as time crystals wouldbreak the fundamental concept of time isotropy .
The only problem is that progression is slow : the Berkeley researchershave admittedthat the project could take “ anywhere between three and eternity long time ” to fill in .
