It seems like any time a major Hollywood film is announced , fans need Gareth Evans to direct it . Evans is sleep with for gain arguably two of thebest action films ever , The Raid and The Raid 2 , and yet , somehow , has yet to make one of those vainglorious studio movies everyone is so eager to see him do .
“ The problem is I have this matter when I do a film , I really want to give all of myself to it . Commit 100 percent to the vision on it , ” Evans told io9 last month atFantastic Fest in Austin , TX . “ I ca n’t do that in a studio environment . [ But ] I can do that on a film like Apostle with creatives behind it like the team at XYZ and Netflix . They allow me that creative freedom to flex these muscles . ”
Apostle , which Evans wrote and conduct , isa two - plus hour period filmabout a homo who move around to a distant island to find his nobble sis . It ’s not just the furthest thing from a big budget superhero movie , it ’s a Brobdingnagian exit from The Raid films for which Evans is so well - sleep together .

“ Once The Raid one and two had come out , as slap-up and wonderful as those films were for me creatively , it became a thing where I was like ‘ Action ? No , ’ ” Evans say . “ My love for film amount from a big raiment of different styles , so I wanted to go off anddo something a fleck different . ”
First , Evans made a short film call Safe Haven , which is part ofthe anthology filmV / H / S 2 . It ’s about a news team who infiltrate a cult with skanky and terrifying results . “ [ Safe Haven ] was an opportunity for me to attempt to do something horror and I find there were certain visual similarity in the storytelling between horror and action , ” Evans said . “ Even when it had activeness it was more repugnance - base action at law , less martial arts action . So it all sort of evolved from there . ”
That experience ended up meld with a memory Evans had from long before he made not justThe Raid films , but any films at all . “ Weirdly go way , room , way , back when I was a lot , lot younger , before I ’d made anything professional at all , I made a forgetful picture in my Nan ’s house that was a very former embodiment of the plot for this , ” Evans say “ It was about a sib searching for a lose brother , and there was an gasbag with a letter in it with a roseate petal , so that was something that stuck with me . ”

Like that plastic film , which Evans never finished , Apostle begins withDan Stevens’character , Thomas , getting an gasbag with a rose petal in it , which sets him off on a dangerous journeying to penetrate a fad and find his sister . But Evans did n’t just want Apostle to just be a rescue pic . He place it in the past , which contribute one layer , made it about a spiritual cult , which was another , and devote the island several supernatural element that bring it all together .
“ We did n’t do deep nose dive on the backstory because I wanted to make my own thing , ” Evans say . “ But we took a tone at things that would inform our story in price of the period and the setting . All of that research go to inform the fiber , how they behave , and what they would be uncoerced to endure . ”
To give specifics on what those elements are would be a ill service to Apostle , which isan effective , captivating filmwith some really wild twists and turn . However , when you watch it , do not go in await it to be The maraud .

“ I was really queasy about screen it because it ’s so , so different from what I ’ve done before , ” Evans said . “ There ’s still a certain amount of the deoxyribonucleic acid in there somewhere , but there was a sure trepidation about hoi polloi going to see this because it ’s so different . ”
However , while there is some worry now that the film is done , there was none of that while make it . Because Evans did n’t feel like he had to continually build to epic , martial art mark opus , Apostle leave the director to explore other aspects of filmmaking .
“ There was n’t any of that press in this , ” Evans articulate . “ It allowed me to drop these small pockets of mystery story along the agency , to allude to somethings that are going to be fully explain later , some of which persist a mystery , but it allow for more of a calculated approach . ”

Apostle is hugely cinematic , with incredible visuals and even well auditory sensation . However , because it was made for and by Netflix , most citizenry wo n’t ever get to fully get the film on the big covert . amazingly , Evans is fine with that .
“ All of my consumption of films when I was a child was on VHS , ” he said . “ I saw cinema in the incorrect prospect proportion , with mono sound , on a tiny , straight goggle box , with a terrible side verbalizer , and I was still totally immersed in films like Evil Dead 2 and The Godfather . So for me , right now we have UHD 4 K streamed into a television that ’s gigantic with a decent sound fix up ? That ’s not a handsome barter - off . ”
Neither , it turns out , was go from warriorlike arts natural action to period supernatural horror . Apostle fare to Netflix October 12 .
