Guardians of the Galaxy auteur James Gunn is busy writing the third installment in his shoot Marvel serial publication , but he ’s run into a bit of a roadblock . He ’s thinking about retconning an established part of his universe for the next film . We ’re pretty sure we recognise what he want to change — and while it would n’t destroy the Marvel Cinematic Universe , it does arouse the question of what it mean for the MCU to break its own canon .
At the E3 World Building Panel , Gunn told the consultation that he recently finish the first draft of the treatment for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol . 3 . However , there ’s one plot dot he ’s still strain to figure out . He shared that there ’s a modest chemical element he established in the first film , more an Easter egg than anything else , that he ’s conceive about undoing for the next film . Here ’s what he had to say about it :
In the first flick there is the mugshot succession where the characters go through and they ’re go through the mugshots and having their picture taken . And the Nova Corps has information about each of the character coming up on their machinery . Those thing are something that your medium viewer does n’t see at all . Further in support of this being the deepen detail is that Gunn has said the next plastic film may explore Rocket ’s history and backstory , but that it ’d be different from the comics . And Gunn already expressed a hesitation to include Lylla , back when he was blab about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol . 2 . In a Facebook Q&A , viaCinemaBlend , Gunn say :
You ’ll have to wait and see on Lylla . But I will say I think a raccoon being sexually attract to an otter is similar to a human being sexually attracted to a possum . Weird “ human - opossum lovemaking ” comparison by , it makes sense that Gunn would n’t have require Lylla in the second film , since part of it centered around Rocket bonding with Yondu ( and acquire how to trust others ) and she would ’ve complicated that moral force .

But at the end of the day , I do n’t think retconning something like Lylla ’s introduction would be that expectant a deal — particularly since he ’s being honest with devotee about why he ’s doing it and the risk it poses to the constituted timeline . If the option is either weaken the canyon or not have Lylla , I think having Lylla is worth it . I ’d love to see what she ’d institute to the next Guardians film and to Rocket ’s persona . One tiny crack in the MCU ’s glossy veneer is a small Leontyne Price to bear for that .
