When a filmmaker like Kevin Smith gets ahold of a pop franchise , it ’s natural to be queer what he ’ll do with it . That goes double for something like his novel He - Man show at Netflix , because the banner so successfully reimaginedShe - Ra and the Princesses of Powernot too long ago . lately , io9 spoke with Smith , who explained that while he ’s in awe of what the squad did withShe - Ra , his show , Masters of the Universe : Revelation , is going in another centering .
“ Our manifest was to be fanservicey , ” Smith recount io9 on the phone last month whilepromoting his young playscript . “ We did not have a form of originative , lease ’s call it , freedom to reinvent the franchise the means that She - Ra did and did it brilliantly . [ Noelle Stevenson ’s ] She - Ra cartoon play to a lot more people than it probably ever would have play to if they just kept it in its original embodiment . But She - Ra , even in its era , was n’t as well known Arthur Robert Ashe - Man and the Masters of the Universeso there ’s more way for creative thinking there . And in fact , that ’s what they were allowed to do . ”
or else of reinvention , Smith and his squad went the other way : they leaned heavily into what the original animated series was , which is the only reason Smith took the job in the first place . “ To be honest with you , I would n’t have taken the job if they were like , ‘ You get to reinvent He - Man and the Masters of the Universe , ’ ” Smith said , “ I ’m really not that originative . I would not be the guy rope you ’d exploit to reinvent something . But if you require to keep it going fondly , true to the franchise and just get up the character a little number so their conversations are a piffling more grownup - oriented ? [ I ’m your guy wire . ] ” He clarified , “ And I certainly do n’t mean they ’re all babble out about sex activity . Not at all . There ’s no sex in the show whatsoever . It ’s definitely a family - oriented show . The idea fit in was we have to be capable to show the characters both audiences can enjoy . The audience that originate up watch out it , who are now like in their 40s or fifty , and their kids — who , presumptively , they ’re function to learn this show with . ”

That ’s where the Marvel inspiration occur in . Smith said in the author ’s room he and the others tried to apply what he called the Marvel method . “ And by Marvel method , we intend theMarvel Cinematic Universe , ” he said . “ Which is when I go to the Marvel motion-picture show and I take my kid , I ’m enjoying it and I ’m enjoying sharing it with my tyke because I was like , ‘ This is the shit I grew up on . ’ Now you ’re growing up on it , too … That ’s what we baked into the DNA of Masters of the Universe : Revelation . ”
Smith order he had the same experience when his father took him to see Raiders of the Lost Ark and , more latterly , watching WandaVision . “ It ’s mean to be enjoyed the same way that I enjoyed WandaVision with my wife , ” Smith said . “ My married woman did n’t hump shit about the Marvel Universe . And finally , she was like , ‘ I will watch this WandaVision , ’ [ and ] every three minutes on the show I got to pause it to be like , ‘ Let me explain the chronicle and do a whole tutorial . ’ So if you know [ Masters of the Universe ] , you ’re going to be bowl over at how lawful to the original show , the show you maturate up on [ this one is . ] We are just taking it the next ordered step in sort of more current storytelling . ” But the creator does n’t want fans to get disquieted when he says matter like “ more current storytelling . ”
“ Again , it ’s not like we break everybody and now they ’re all cyberpunk version of themselves , ” he say . “ They are recognizable to what everybody used to learn on the classic interpretation of the cartoon … if they were like , ‘ Hey , humanity , we need you to take this and fucking blow it apart . We want you to do with Masters of the Universe what they did with She - Ra , ’ I would be like , ‘ I ’m the absolute improper cat for that . ’ You need a visionary for something like that . But if you ’re need me to just retain the story ? That ’s what I do in comedian anyway . Like when I wrote my Daredevil foot race , when Iwrote my Green Arrow run , and I approach this the same means . This is just me doing a run of issues of Masters of the Universe and the character are in my care for this very limited sentence . But I did n’t create these characters . So I also do n’t sense the need to recreate these characters . ”
