I ’ve been a bad man . Fujifilm lent me a brace of cameras well over a calendar month ago for review and I ’m just now getting around to writing up my depression of them . Normally I dawdle on these sort of things because I do n’t need to compose them , usually because the intersection is so poor or boring that I just ca n’t get excited enough to say anything meaningful .
That ’s not the case here ( although I make no promises of “ meaningful ” ) . The Fujifilm F440 has been in my bag for weeks now and I ’m going to be sorry to see it go . It ’s exactly what I had been looking for in a sidearm and I could advocate it to almost any occasional photographer who want a good tv camera that ’s small enough to take anywhere .
My impressions after the jump ( I ’ve brought lots of wigging , so follow out . )

First , my soiled secret : I love photographic camera , but I do n’t recognize much about them . I ’d say I ’m your average consumer when it comes to digital cameras . I know a little about film speed and F - stops and megapixels and the like , and I certainly know when to get mad about new DSLR ( reply : when it ’s Modern and bright ) . But ever since I take over Gizmodo , I ’ve been count for a new scoop camera to complete my fake journalist ensemble ; sizing was the telephone number one factor , with battery life a close second , and image character a more or less remote third .
What I ’m say is that if you need to know about the livid balance or superform clearness Huygens metrix apperature scale timings or whatever , I ’m not your homo . Please check out any act of hunky-dory photography website and blogs on your local cyberspace .
But what I can talk about is how well the F440 do at being portable , being light to use , and how it impresses even gadget - weary trade wind show representative . I ’m going to skip to the punchline and say that it does all of those things very well .

I had been look at the Sony DSC - T1 . I almost buy one , if fact , but a half - mean solar day excursion through Manhattan trying to weasel out a ripe price from the various electronics vendors left me sort of worn out and foiled and of the persuasion that perchance I did n’t need a camera after all . I ’m glad I did n’t get one , though , especially at the $ 500 or so the T1 was going for a few months back .
What I liked about the T1 was that it was so pocket-size and well-fixed . I need something that I can take everywhere just in case to take pictures when my cameraphone wo n’t cut it ( which is most of the time ) . The F440 has almost everything I like about the DSC - T1 , but only cost about $ 250 ( there is a 5 - megapixel F450 adaptation that buy the farm for a little more ) . I ’ve had the F440 in my jeans sac and in either of the two dish I apply for over a month and never noticed it at all . It ’s small and unhorse enough to be a non - element ( except you do n’t require to put it in the same pouch as yours Francis Scott Key ) .
In fact , the only problem I ’ve run into so far has been that the lens comprehend sometimes sticks open and you have to knock the chassis to get it to close up . That ’s a potentially big trouble , plainly , but if you are aware of it it does n’t really make that bighearted of a dispute . If it ’s a problem indigenous to the product line itself , though , Fujifilm needs to furbish up that pronto .

It ’s been great , though . I just keep the included USB cable in my bag along with the F440 , take shooter whenever ( the battery has keep a charge for up to two week of disuse , although to be fair I usually only shoot 5 - 6 photo and then put it away ) . The controls are very dewy-eyed to use and interpret ( although some masses have bother figure out the big switch on the front is the on / off skidder ) . It even comes with nice dock that has a rocker switch that interchange between USB and “ meet ” ( as in “ Play a slideshow of your images . ” )
So yeah , I like it , but I do n’t really know what else to say . I ’m not much of a photographer ( as you may see from the images I use on the web site ) but I ’ve gotten such a kick out of the F440 – showing it to people , watch out them ooh and aah over it – that I wanted to get the Good Book out what a good piece of outfit this is .
Oh , and here ’s a review from somebody that is evidently smart than me ( and know more about picture taking , too ) .
