Two weeks ago , we rode heavy , heavy adventure bikes off - route through some of the remotest portions of British Columbia . It was a challenge , sure , and it was pretty , of form , but it was also one of those rare adventure that meant something special . Here ’s why .

It ’ll have the usual guidance of course ; like all IndefinitelyWild ’s travel features , we desire to inspire you to do these things , then show you how to do them yourself . Day One : After a late nighttime trajectory into Seattle and a hurried dinner party rate at the hotel , just as the kitchen closed , it was time to get the bikes off the trailer and dilute them up with our tools and camping gear .

In an initial coming together where they tried politely to determine if I stand a good chance of falling off my bicycle and drop dead during the drive , I inform them I had no experience with their gear , but did have an assumptions - based opinion that it would n’t be any unspoiled , and that I reserved the right not to wear off the couple grand in jackets , pants and whatnot they were strain to get me to provide with .
So things were a bit awkward as we depend on around Puget Sound , finally making our means up to Port Angeles to take the ferryboat up to Victoria , where we spent the night . I broke the ice at dinner by show everyone pictures of my frump as we ate steaks and drank too much wine .

I was racing along with the lead rider , averaging between 100 and 110 mph , when I was overcome by a sudden and consuming demand to pee . I had n’t gotten two statute mile after that little break when I come around the corner to discover Cam , our de facto loss leader , pull over on the side of the road by a Mountie in an unnoted SUV . Someone had call us in ; Canadians have really started to dislike speeding . To add vilification to injury , the anonymous association football - mobile had one of those little stick figure family stickers on its tailgate . Look closely and it ’s actually a police sergeant and three small deputy .
The beers and prime costa on the ferryboat made up for it . This first pegleg was on a large gravy boat that do a regular religious service up and down British Columbia ’s Inland Passage , serving various First Nation communities and traveller bound for adventure .
While I was out on the deck looking for northern Inner Light when someone decided to slip my blanket and pillow . I grab an hour of sleep on the backbreaking , frigid carpet of the lounge while plotting my retaliation .
Wildlife spotted today : 2 Humpback Whales , 1 pod of Orcas , many Bald Eagles , many Dolphins .
Day Three : We were woken up by the tannoy at 12:30am so we could unload at Bella Bella , some midget short island community located deep in a fjord . BC Ferries is under some sort of Homeland Security anti - terrorist decree , so makes a point of see IDs multiple times throughout each boarding / debarkation process . It ’s insanely annoying when you ’re wearing motorcycle gloves and a helmet .
Note to ISIS : If you were think of highjack a ferry in British Columbia and navigate it into the White House , remember again .
We waited around in a cold , dismal parking lot for two hours , then rode down the ramp to a much smaller ferry , bind for Bella Coola and point along the way . That fit our 12 bikes , chase motortruck , a transportation container and five cars . We assume over one of the two modest room uncommitted , unrolled our air mattresses and turned in for a few more hour sleep . Sometime around sunup , we were awoken by a crewmember who throw start the room access , gagged at the human race reek and showed us how we could crack a windowpane for fresh aura .
The ferry did n’t get in until about 1 autopsy , so we had all morning to hang out on the lilliputian gravy boat , observe the incredibly beautiful scene go by , talk about tire pressures and toy with a Bull Terrier .
I figured what followed would be a short drive , but instead , we hit our first dirt and rode until sundown . Today ’s section remained unpaved , its deadly precipice and steep acclivity have prevented that for 60 years .
Bella Coola Valley is a “ democratic ” tourist destination , in that you could actually find gas , a computer memory and a smattering of masses in it . But , this far north , “ popular ” mean we saw one or two cars along the manner . The reasonableness it ’s so popular is that it seems to be a near precise reproduction of Yosemite Valley ’s stunning rock-and-roll formation , just scaled up to four time the stature . And man , that place is also just incredible . Nary a human in sight , anywhere you go .
Tatlayoko is also one of the top global destinations for confidential information surfing , perched above a vale at eminent elevation , the winds here apparently become violent enough to give the 17 - mile lake a reliable four - foot rupture and have been know to kill on what sound like a somewhat veritable basis . Not today though , it was so calm during our visit that it do as a flawless mirror , meditate the sunset over the plenty top beyond .
After dinner that nighttime — local salmon cooked in local maple syrup and Berry — the Aether guys break out a occult Haliburton metal briefcase that had been blow around the back of the chase truck all trip . Well , I ’ll let you see what was in it .

Day Four : We ’d expend the night before poring over map with the owner of a local ranch . Our destination for the daytime was Big Gang Ranch , a ways to the due east and south . But , we did n’t want to get there on the main road . A faint line headed in that direction from Tatlayoko , a road even our unexampled local friend had never been down . Perfect .
Even more so when we found a self-aggrandising “ Road Closed ” sign at its entrance . It was 60 miles long and we had virtually no idea of its condition or if it was even passable . We kept joke about what we ’d do to the gate that could hypothetically be shut it off at the other side , but any joke were half - hearted , because there was a very genuine possibility we could get through it all , only to recover our access to the highway blocked and be forced to turn around . That was something we could n’t accomplish , we were n’t carrying enough fuel to make the return misstep .
Ever ridden a big , gruelling escapade wheel off - road ? They ’re designed to do it and are amazingly open . But man , is it hard work . This closed road promptly turned from smooth dirt to a close forest course hem in on both side by trees , its control surface became loose rocks , interspersed with swampy clay .
Most of the rest of the Guy were on appropriate , knobby tires , but I ’d catch a Super Tenere from Yamaha at the last moment and did n’t have time to swap out its street tires . I figured that ’d be fine , because surely these guys were a bunch of candy butt who ’d flummox to fire roads , then brag about dirt . But , here I was seek to hustle a 636lbs motorcycle up and down steep hills covered in quiet baseball - sized pebbles on tire that would n’t grip ; about as hard as riding gets .

Day Five : We woke up to a lightheaded coating of hoar on our tent and motorcycle , but warmed up with biscuits and gravy . It was a short ride back to the Fraser River , which we queer on a lowly , cable - operated ferry operated by a ugly governance employee .
