Eight years after its release , the mere acknowledgment of Bad Robot ’s find footage film Cloverfield is still a lightning gat . Whether people love it or detest it , everyone has a strong opinion about it . We sawthat play out recentlywhen a seemingly unrelated film was revealed to be style 10 Cloverfield Lane , and everyone went nuts .

All of that made me curious about revisit the original film without all the hype that surrounded it eight old age ago . No viral selling , no potential continuation — just me and 84 minute of work by manufacturer J.J. Abrams ( The Force Awakens ) , author Drew Goddard ( The Martian ) , and manager Matt Reeves ( Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ) . Some character die immediately , others get split up from the radical , and all those dramatic threads work to give this demon storey an excited root . And that monster , by the way of life , is never fully explained or named in the entire runtime of the film . Because Cloverfield is structured as an almost real time , videotaped explanation of one chemical group ’s experience , we never learn any more than they do . Which is not much . And that , to me , is the biggest reason Cloverfield is still so polarizing .

It comes down to this : Either you love the fact that the whole movie is left so open - concluded , or you detest it . Either you want answers , or you ’re cool with nothing but questions . You may also have a go at it or detest the film ’s rickety - Cam River aesthetic — which , true , can be jarring , even when watching at home . For me , the camera work is venial because it add together to the realistic feel . Plus I jazz that we only get hints of where the monster come from . We do n’t even know whether or not it ’s defeated at the end . All we do is live the story of these characters for a few time of day of their living . Cloverfield , as a construct , stretches far beyond the inning of the film . It unapologetically sparkle your resource , with no determinate payoff .

Some other potentially negative things stand out about it too . There ’s no doubtfulness the film is made scarier by using subtle 9/11 imagery of on - the - ground New York destruction . Cartesian product placement throughout the film is also blatant , in a frustrating way . gratefully , both of those things never push the film too far off its focus .

That focus , without a doubtfulness , is action , and Cloverfield fork up quite well . Rewatching the flick , it ’s hard not to be impressed with the seamless portmanteau of visual effects and location shooting . It makes the whole flick finger as expansive as a movie with credibly 10 times its budget ( Box Office Mojosays the film cost $ 25 million . ) Some sequences — like an action scenery in a eggbeater — are enamor so beautifully , it ’s still mind - blowing that they were able to pull it off . And every once in a while , we ’re prompt that we ’re see found footage , as the late contents of the taping that ’s being recorded over ( of Rob and Beth on their first real date ) pops back up . No matter how softheaded it get , with short nods like that , Cloverfield never lose its humanity .

And really , it ’s heavy to minimize the crazy tempo of the motion picture . It ’s 84 minute long . Twenty or so of those proceedings are dedicated to character and human race - building . The credits are probably about 6 - 7 minute too , which is slightly longer than usual . So basically you ’re really looking at an hour - long monster movie , with about five firm set pieces , and scores of Easter Eggs about who and what could have have the teras .

Oh , and those recognition ? They ’re maybe the best part of the picture show . Over them is a opus of music called “ Roar , ” written by Oscar - gain composer Michael Giacchino . Before the credits , all the euphony in the pic only happens within the world of the movie . Nothing is added for striking event . We ’re just ascertain a picture . That changes over the citation with “ Roar , ” an original composition of music that captures the film ’s excitement masterfully . It ’s certainly one of Giacchino ’s best . hear for yourself .
