As conductor of the first two Harry Potter films , Chris Columbus helped make everything people love about the iconic dealership . Now , as he gets ready to release his unexampled film Pixels , the author of The Goonies and Gremlins once again has an estimate for everyone ’s favorite male child adept .
“ Personally , I would always consider go back and doing one between the last picture show , and chute 25 years ahead , when Harry was married , ” Columbus said . “ I ’ve always been curious what happen between those moments , you make out ? The terminal tantrum when they were still kids and the moment where he was thirty . There has to be a slap-up story in Harry ’s biography at that point . Hopefully [ J.K. Rowling ] will possibly think about doing that . Even if I would n’t make a motion-picture show , I ’d still wish to read those stories . ”
He ’s not the only one . And though Rowling is busy going backwards in ceramicist - lore with 2016 ’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them , if anyone could get a new Potter narrative to life story , it ’s Columbus , a filmmaker who has been bring us outstanding story for a tenacious sentence .

From his screenplay in the 1980s ( The Goonies , Gremlins ) , to his drollery smasher of the ninety ( Home Alone , Mrs. Doubtfire ) , and his big budget fantasies of the aughts ( the first two Harry Potter movies ) , it ’s hard to overstate the impact Chris Columbus has had on film . Now with Pixels , he ’s set about to mash all those elements into one movie .
“ People have say to me over the years , ‘ Why do n’t you ever lead anything that you would ’ve written in the 80 ’s , like Gremlins or The Goonies ’ ? ” Columbus said to io9 . “ Something that had an ‘ Amblin ’ quality to it . Well , there was never really that opportunity until I say this handwriting . And when I say the book I palpate that I could potentially create the same variety of feeling we all have when we sit down in the theater in 1985 and we watched those movies . That ’s what I gear up out to execute . I wanted the audiences for a summer film or superhero movies and sequels to see something original . Something that they have n’t see before , but to still have that Amblin feel . ”
Pixels , which unfold Friday , star Adam Sandler , Kevin James , Peter Dinklage , Josh Gad and Michelle Monaghan in a film where aliens assail the Earth disguise as classic video game reference . To defeat them , the government recruits some of the best gamers of the eighties to lead the cathexis .

“ I just really fell in love with those fiber , ” Columbus said . “ The fact that these were the characters who had to add up back and save our major planet . These were the only ones who sleep together how to play these games as well as they do . I was really adopt with that , and that was the reason I wanted to do it . ”
Of naturally , a film about video biz characters hinges on many matter , one of which is the official license for these games . Pixels was golden enough to remove the licenses for dozens and dozens of Greco-Roman games , from major ones like Donkey Kong , Pac - Man , Space Invaders and Centipede , to a slew of smaller one like Paperboy and Burger Time . Many of the vociferation - outs are obvious , while others are just put in the frame as Easter Eggs .
“ I designed the final sequence in Washington , DC variety of like an old Mort Drucker Mad Magazine control board , ” Columbus joked .

Unfortunately , some of the pic ’s biggest surprises were revealed in the film ’s marketing . Columbus , like many filmmakers these days , was not felicitous about that .
“ One of the biggest moments in the film was the Professor [ Toru ] Iwatani [ who make Pac - Man ] consequence , which has , quite candidly , been spoiled in the trailer , ” Columbus said . “ alas I do n’t spend enough time looking at turn or try out to figure out why they do what they do . ” Columbus also wanted to keep the film ’s final boss a closed book , but that ’s ruined in the dawdler too . “ It was ou destination all along to save [ couch ] , and that ’s what we thought would happen in good order up until the day we saw the first trailers . ”
But Columbus still finger the celluloid has destiny that a preview simply ca n’t ruin . “ I do n’t conceive any of the sequences have been fluff because they ’re so much bigger , and also because the film was design to be get a line in 3-D , ” he said . “ There ’s nothing more spectacular than seeing those sequence in 3D , in an IMAX theater . ”

In addition to telling us his aforementioned melodic theme for a Harry Potter subsequence , Columbus had more to say about the most celebrated dealership he ’d work on . Columbus severalize me that he was surprised that role player Daniel Radcliffe , Emma Watson and Rupert Grint ended up being as capital as they were .
“ I ’d be lying if I said I recognise by movie seven they would have wrick into the people that they did , ” Columbus said . “ We cast them because they felt really so perfect for the roles . ” He said the first movie has a lot more cuts than the rest because the kids had such a grueling time crafting a performance . The second film fix that though and then , when Columbus step back to produce the third picture , everything clicked into place . “ By the time we got to three they had really develop into fantastic actors , ” he said . “ I was very lofty of that . I take care back on it and I ’m extremely proud of it , and I do n’t tend to go back and think about old clobber that much . ”
And though he does n’t look back at his old stuff too much , one matter he ’s been front back at for a foresighted time is The Goonies . Fans have clamored for and discourse a subsequence for tenner .

late , I even got my work force on a fake Goonies 2 script , that was credited to Columbus . A script I quite like , but have a go at it he did n’t write .
The fake book picks up immediately following the closing of the 1985 film . A raft of crooks have jumped into smaller boats and gone blazing after One - Eyed Willy ’s ship . When the first individual daringly gets on circuit board , a new booby snare goes off , blowing everything to bit . From there , it jumps forward thirty years and we foregather the honest-to-goodness character , grow up . Unfortunately , the hand ends a few pages later which , along with Columbus ’ name on the front page , were just a few of the attempt to make the fake script face like an authentic escape .
“ Well two things , ” Columbus say . “ First of all , would you commit me that ? Because I ’d love to see it . I ’m not pull the leg of , if it really is that good . They ’ve been struggling with it for years . I ’m kind of manage [ a continuation ] but I ’m very sceptical because I do n’t want to go back and wound something that so many citizenry love . But I ’d make love to see that handwriting if it ’s good , I intend , we have n’t read anything specially great over the last few years . ”

spoilt news on that front , though . For effectual reasons , Columbus ’ team would n’t allow him see the book . The good tidings is his hesitancy to leap out into continue that fib is just another reason why , even when he has a misstep , Chris Columbus will always be a movie maker to give a shot .
