The leave exposure display a beautiful compounding of colors and an eery stillness , bewitch in a town famous for its fuss and life but most recently cognize for its agony and loss . Frank ’s latest print work has focussed on nature but the city stay at the heart of his creative output .
Frank explains his oeuvre in his own words : “ ” I went to New York to detect picture taking , but lost it in the vivid lights and darkrooms . I came home to New Orleans and listened to Bob French ’s voice on WWOZ . On pondering nightly drives behind the wheel of my nanna ’s 1986 Lincoln Town Car , I discovered a newfangled path to see . ”
“ Low to the ground , that panoptic , old windshield provided the good viewfinder I ’ve ever used .. the photographs are light up to capture the humor from that same perspective . The ikon leave room for the viewers ’ interpretations and for a cast of character to take position in the foreground . ”
“ The city at night comes alert for me . I imagine account about the people ’s lives inside the habitation found on the evidence on the outside . My photographs become a portrait without the person . The night obscures detail and the want of info throw possible action . ”
“ Each view becomes like a theatre microscope stage , I can manipulate the mood and atmosphere of the shape by adding dissimilar colored light , emphasizing dark and highlight . I ca n’t hold the weather at Nox but I can affect how it feels . They say that one of the jobs of a photographer is to coordinate the visual chaos of the world . By working at dark I ’m able to guide the witness by hiding things in the shadows and focusing the viewer ’s care with the areas I spotlight . ”
“ New Orleans is my home , it is the place I live . photograph what I know allow me to photograph with deeper understanding and connection to my subjects . I understand the visual language of New Orleans because I was erect on New Orleans account , New Orleans literature , her food , her euphony and all the objet d’art of New Orleans civilisation . ”
“ My goal for the project before Katrina was to tell the stories of New Orleans people through architectural subjects . My goal for the project after Katrina was to persist in to state the narrative of New Orleans masses through architectural subjects . ”
“ The biggest remainder was after Katrina many more mass were paying attention to the story of New Orleans and how it related to the story of our sentence .. Katrina give my photographs recognition , a recognition I hope but it ’s always been a foreign feeling juxtapose with all the people and memories she took aside . ”
“ Each photograph is a story . Sometimes the storey about me , sometimes it ’s a story about someone I fuck or someone I just fit , sometimes it ’s a story about my kin , sometimes it ’s a fictionalized historical drama about life in the South , mostly the pic are a ocular start point for the tarradiddle in the viewers mind . ”
“ I am often turning lights on and off during the course of my exposure . The principal light is typically on for a few minutes and reckon on the shot I will go away extra time for fill luminosity in the foliage . Often after the theme is lit I turn off all the lights and lease the sky stay to expose . ”
“ Many of the homeowner have become collectors of my work sometimes buying a photograph of their house and often times buy a photograph of a dissimilar home . I take this as an formulation of appreciation . My experience with homeowners has been surprisingly positive considering sometimes I am making their house look much strange than it does during the day . ”
