These day , every supervillain has a convolute backstory . But are the most fearful moving picture villains those who show up already fully - formed , seemingly without motives or account ?
Afterlooking at the comparatively tepid ( and perceptibly dragon - transformation inferior ) storylinethat the new Maleficent pursue , a word began about whether the movie could have been save by jettisoning some of the backstory . Or , in other words , could n’t a villain sometimes just be a scoundrel ?

Someone in the io9 review commented that what happened to being evil just because ? Since when do we ask a backstory , why ca n’t we leave well enough alone , why do we have to decoct an awe-inspiring character down to banality backstories , tropes etc . And I entirely agree . What makes Maleficent so great is that there is no patent rhyme or reason to why she curses an babe ( other than being rebuff an invitation to a Christening ) and I ’m perfectly fine with this .

And also thank you for bring up the Prince Philip subplot from the original ! I had block about it myself until the last time I rewatched it . Holy hell , Maleficent was not playing around .
It ’s so much more fun to watch a villain reveling in her / his iniquity , and doing terrible thing just for giggles , as oppose to watching the overused “ misunderstood anti - hero ” grapheme mope around and eventually instruct a lesson about how retaliation is haywire . There ’s nothing improper with humanizing a villain or flesh out their motivations , but not all of them need to be like that . Sometimes they can simply be evil because that ’s what they choose to be . That ’s what made Maleficent such a forbidding , awesome villain in the archetype .

When Christopher Nolan blab about the Joker , he sound out he did not do an origin story because the Joker was supposed to be downright : all evil , all chaos , and no reason .
In my mind , Maleficent was the same … pure evil . I have in mind , she curses a babe because she was not ask for to a party ! So I was n’t glad with her origin story ( As my friend said , they did a Vader on her , turned her form pure evil to a victim of circumstance ) . Perhaps if her rootage story focus more on her and a bunch less on Aurora ( whom I find extremely pesky in this movie ) just like they did with the Wicked Witch of the West in Wicked .
