Scientists have just discovered the first multicellular animate being that can survive completely without atomic number 8 . They live in the L’Atalante Basin in the Mediterranean Ocean , a situation with table salt brine so compact it does n’t mix with atomic number 8 - containing waters above .
This is pretty mad stuff . antecedently , it was thought that only individual - celled sprightliness could exist in such inhospitable blank space , but this proves otherwise .
The animals shoot up radioactively tagged leucine ( an amino acid ) , and a fluorescent investigation that tag living cells , evidence that they were awake when they were collected . The researchers also detect examples of individuals that contained eggs and evidence of apparent moult , which top them to reason out that the brute drop their whole biography in the rough sediments . The fauna ’s cells apparently lack mitochondria , the organelles that expend oxygen to power a cellular telephone . Instead they are fat in what seem to be hydrogenosomes , organelles that can do a similar job in anaerobic ( or oxygen free ) environments .

This is interesting not only for the study of our oceans , but for life off our satellite as well . After all , if life can exist where there ’s no O , what ’s to say living ca n’t be in some of the harsh atmospheres that live on other planets and moons ? And at this point , why the underworld have n’t they reach us yet ? Are we not ready ? Just enjoin us what to do , space friends ! Come on ! [ Science MagviaSlashdot ]
