There ’s nothing like an larger-than-life fantasy novel to deliver mega - battles . And here ’s one of the most mega , the battle of Dumai ’s Wells from Robert Jordan ’s Lord of Chaos , as illustrated by Greg Manchess for Tor ’s reprinting of the book .
cluck the persona to see it in full , burning glory . Over at Tor , Manchess explained how he chose which part of the battle to illustrate :
I had to plunk the moment carefully . Depict a minute too far in advance of the havoc and it weakens the fervour . Too far after the initial firestorm and I ’d be depicting scads of charred heart . I opt the moment just before the blowup went rending through the ranks altogether . The wave is just starting to sweep over the Aiel , but as timing is n’t quite so precise , I depict the flames cresting quickly from right hand to left , allowing the viewer “ meter ” to see what was about to come . arrant flaming bedlam .

Utter flame chaos is what we wish to see first thing in the morning , give thanks you very much .
