Bokeh is the passing essence of blur , something you’re able to see yet remain completely intangible . Other times , it can be shape into a mold , check and specific . The 306 entries from this week’sShooting Challengecapture bokeh at both extreme .

Lead Photo – Scent of a Woman

We put Christmas luminance on the paries and I had a patient friend as a poser pretending to aromatise herself for an hour . Nikon D3000 , 50 mm , f/1.8 , ISO 3200 , 1/20 sec .

Miniature Stetson

I was walking the street of Hipsterville ( aka Los Feliz , L.A. ) , on the prowl for what my friend calls ‘ body - dumpers’—older beat - up American giants with expansive trunks that bring up the transport of bodies , a la Jimmy Hoffa . My ally has a website , bodydumpers.com , and I ’d been meaning to add . ( We ’re from Detroit , may excuse the preoccupation with flap up American elevator car , Hoffa , dead bodies in trunks )

I stumbled upon this beautifully battered crimson Jeep Wagoneer , complete with bogus wood pane . I took a gross ton of shots before I noticed the coolheaded part about the motortruck — the little cowboy hat hanging from the rearview . Shooting with a 5D mkII body and an EF 24 - 70 mm f/2.8L lens , shot 70 mm , wide undetermined at f/2.8 , ISO 400 . I knew from the hyperfocal contest that the longer the focal length and the closer I was to the subject , the shallower the depth of field , and the better the Bokeh .

Glitter

Long fourth dimension devotee , first meter courageous enough to enter the challenge . I really wanted to take moving picture of a cityscape , or find a ferris wheel somewhere . When that did n’t work out , I almost give up until I realized I could mime the same effect with glitter . I force out this sure-enough purse of mine and snap away in different angles . take me forever to pick the one I like the most , but I ’m reasonably felicitous with the final result . Here ’s to pee it forge ! Only some cropping in Picasa . Specs : Canon Rebel XS 18 - 55 mm , ISO 400 F1/5

Aston Martin

I was messing around with pictures of Christmas tree lights to get some melodic theme and noticed that the lights were mainly red , yellow and green , which made me imagine of a layover wanton . I seize a diecast model of an Aston Martin V12 Vanquish ( from the James Bond movie , Die Another Day ) that I have and place it on top of a corner that I cover with a grey mantle to simulate aphalt . I draped a fateful blanket over a chair so the visible light would would stick out out . The Christmas tree lights were tough to work as they were n’t staying in situation just hanging over the blanket , so I used some dark electric magnetic tape and taped them to a pen to set them in a row . I used another cover to cover the other lights around the three subject lights . Set the car about 5 feet from the light and my tripod about 3 fundament behind the car . Stopped down to 5.6 and focused on the rear of the car to get the bokeh gist . Used a hand-held light to elucidate the tail end of Aston . I took about 50 painting of the lights as green , yellow , red from top to bottom , then realized they were reverse and had to readjust the light in the correct society . Whoops ! 100 or so slam ( including the mistake ) and I liked this one the best . Nikon D60 , Sigma 105 mm Macro , ISO 400 , 105 mm , f/5.6 , Shutter 0.6s

Daylight Bokeh

I kept trying to get an interesting bokeh shot at night , but the daytime stage setting turned out much more pleasing . Shot was taken with string luminosity and a Nikon D90 + 50 mm @ f1.8 , 1/160 , ISO 200 .

Obligatory

The idea for this pic actually wake up me out of a deep nap . I sit up in bottom and said “ EXPLODING DEATH STAR BOKEH ! ! ! ” My hapless wife opened her eyes and kinda said “ whaza ? ” before fall at once back to kip . I leave her in bottom and went to work blowing up a Death Star .

The primary subject of this photo is a Micro Machines ten - fender that I grease one’s palms new about 20 years ago . It ’s not much cock-a-hoop than a US one-fourth . Thanks to the small weighing machine , I did n’t have to build a very large Death Star . It is a just about golf game ballock sized clump of tin foil peppered with some dyed translucent Lego brick . I just impart bricks until the bokeh’d Death Star looked dainty and explodey . I setup this scene in my lightbox and then proceed it into a cheery windowpane . My regular red-hot light were n’t giving me bright enough bokeh by themselves . A few shot later , I had this !

Photoshop work includes clone out a low bamboo skewer I was using to hold up the X - wing . I also did a niggling scheme work on the battler to convey out some of the greys and a slight craw to make the shot a niggling more dramatic . Shot with my Nikon D300 and 55 mm f/2.8 manual macro lens . F/2.8 , 1/1250th , ISO 200 , daytime bloodless counterpoise . May the bokeh be with you !

Orange Fizz

This is a shot of orange soda with a fiddling bokeh fizz . For this shot I acquired a shooting helper , tripod , my 50 mm G - serial canon lens system , and some Christmas lights . I suppose I would examine to incorporate the bokeh balls , typically a lowly topic , into the primary feather and came up with this . 50 mm , 1.8 , 1/30 , iso 400 .

Snowcase

I endure in the Washington DC Metro arena and tonight we had the biggest snowstorm since last twelvemonth . I ’ve been trying to get some dead reckoning using depth of field and snowflakes all winter but I ’ve always either been work when the snow is just proper or it ’s been freezing rain rather . I did n’t find to have my camera on me but I was at my mother ’s , so I nibble up her Canon Digital Rebel XSi and her wide slant lens ( Only lens she has right now ) and operate to township . I could n’t journey far because I was worried about contract Baron Snow of Leicester all over her camera , so I stayed under the deck above our service department and took some shot . This was the sound shot I got and I had to habituate ostentation to do it , but I ’m very happy with the result .

Coffee Shop

I take this pic with a Minolta X700 . It was Ilford HP5 fastness 400 motion-picture show . I develop my film and impress my exposure and then scan them sometimes . This photo took me for a while to get the contrast right because the negative was pretty thin . That ’s my friend Cody ’s profile in the reflectivity of a window at a burnt umber shop .

City Lights

A friend of mine once tell me about a petty conjuring trick for long exposure , which is to Delaware - concentre during the exposure . vocalise like just the thing I could use to let me bokeh shot stand out a bit . I had some issues with defining the bokeh egg well at first because the camera keep back moving when I changed the focus . The fix was to brood the lens while I de - concentrate the image . I care how the stars in the background are in focus – you could say it ’s reverse - bokeh . Shot with a 35 millimetre f/1.4 lens on a Canon T2i at f/1.4 , ISO 100 , 5 second vulnerability .

Homebody

The air was kinky , breeze its way into my room because of the cracked windowpane . All of the lights were off , except for the glow of outside . Sometimes it ’s proficient to evaporate while the external populace lights up . Nikon D3100 , Lens : 35 mm – F/1.8

WINNER – Double Snowflakes

Oh , the atmospheric condition outside is horrible … or is it ? Actually , it ’s quite beautiful when there is a slow , gentle snowfall . This is a photo of the snow return tonight ( January 26 ) in Merrimack , NH . The farad - stoppage listed above is about as accurate as I can be . When I get home , I slice up a white aperture disk into the shape of a snowbird , grabbed my old , but knock-down flash ( that can actually lick with the full manual lenses , unlike the build - in or my SB400 ) , and start shoot off into the Baron Snow of Leicester ( but focus very close ) . The result is that each literal snowbird in the frame of the image became a point of Light Within which , due to the near direction and the snowflake shaped aperture disc , appeared as large snowflakes . Nikon D90 , ancient off - brand name flash ( BRIGHT ! ! ! ! ) , Lensbaby Control Freak preferences : ~50 mm , ISO100 , f / snowflake , focus at ~12″ from lense .
