What happens when you take a photo , rive away its color and fill in the chromatic gaps with rouge ( or Photoshop ) ? you could make vintage - stylus , hand - colored photos . And sometimes you’re able to scantily even tell the new color is n’t real .

WINNER – Parrot Paint
This is in reality taken with my old film camera , a Minolta SRT-101 with a 35 mm lens . I used Ilford HP5 400 ISO b / w film , at ISO 400 , shutter speed credibly around 1/125 … (not sure , no EXIF information , of course of study . )
I saw this shooting challenge and was enthralled , since I learn how to hand - color in my mellow schoolhouse picture taking course . I run out into my region with my film television camera ( a Minolta SRT-101 ) in hand , desire to actually hand color a photo . This is at a popular tourist spot in my arena , the Santa Monica pier . There was a man with these parrots in front of the carrousel building and I had to photograph them . I developed the film , publish on RC fibre paper , and burnt sienna - toned the print . Then I went in with a paintbrush and water supply - based paints and really handcolored this ! Now , I do n’t remember what colors the parrots actually were … To submit , I just scanned it in with my woefully not - high - enough - quality image scanner .

Mirror Finish
Here ’s the exciting account : I was sit at my desk reading about this workweek ’s competition , glanced to my left , and saw my sodium carbonate from lunch . It was shiny . I busted out my trustworthy iPhone 4 and took a moving picture of the can and used the colourise method acting from photoshopsupport.com . Besides the logotype and lettering , I left the can completely alone in B&W and it actually made it look more vivacious than it was in original colour ( due to reflection ) . I added a bit of gleaming and that was that .

Grasping At Straws
First effort was a nightmare . Using the paint tool in Gimp , stroke up and down endlessly , UNDO , REDO , UNDO . I annul the masking because I felt that it was cheating . I wanted that small imperfection . I overlap the picture and proceeded to pop all over again . This metre with dissimilar people of color for the straw ( may have broken a rule there , but YOU say get creative ) . Then another hour passes and I ’m literally “ savvy at the straws ” . Enjoy Canon Rebel XSI , ISO100 , f/5.6 , 2.5sec , 55 mm .

I ended up making friend with the local geese population there while resting and aim a few photo off my headphone . Surprisingly , they pose for my shots . I even get to sequester a few geese to take their photos . I named this special goose , Sir Kittens . He attacked me at first but I do n’t acknowledge what changed his judgment to get favorable with me . It was an interesting day . Equipment Used : HTC Thunderbolt 8MP Camera , Photo Shop CS5 ,

Steps
This injection was contract as I walked to campus to piece up my wife from work . I particularly enjoyed this exercise . It was hand painted in the Gimp using only a mouse . I used the paintbrush , eraser and daub cock . No other fancy filter other than dial down the impregnation and boosting contrast were used . Around 80 % of the picture was painted . I ’ve walked these step many times , but new buildings are to crop up up soon , and the tennis court it conduct to will be remove . It was dart with a Nikon Coolpix P7000 , f/2.8 , ISO100 , Exposure 1/672sec .

This pictorial matter was direct with a Nikon D5000 television camera , a Nikon DX 18 - 55 mm lens , and ISO setting of 200 . My daughter just got her braces this week . She was not happy about them , but this was a fun way to show them off . Braces may not be fun , but we can still have playfulness with them !

Tubbalicious
After free around Ithiel Town on my bike attempt to find proper shots to judge out hand - food colouring , and I come home less than thrilled with my result . When I pay off dwelling , one of my cats , Sven , was stretched out on the story to make himself as adorable and pettable as possible . And then I realized that I needed more macro scene of the tubbaliciously adorable Sven in my aliveness . I got down on the floor with him and initiate shooting . He quickly became tired of the strange attention and let me sleep together with a utterly dismissive yawn . I got this shaft and itch him under the mentum in thanks .

Desert Oasis
So when I read this calendar week ’s challenge , I thought I would n’t be capable to do it since I do not have Photoshop nor have any approximation of how to use it . After contemplate it a little more , I determine I would try out it by paw . I took a dig of a edifice near my situation and printed out my picture on resume - trend paper . Then I used water-color and painted in some of colors and scanned the paint photo . It ’s not great , but it kind of looks “ honest-to-goodness timey . ” I think it looks like a desert oasis shot from an sometime moving picture . Hope you wish it ! Canon EOS REBEL T1i , EF - S18 - 55 mm f/3.5 - 5.6 IS Lens , f/9 , 1/160 , ISO 100

Black Chair, Blue Wall
For this challenge I tried to keep it elementary to give a good effect , I used my Canon XSi with 50mm1.4 lens to take a movie of the recession of my living room . Desaturated the photo then simply paint by numbers , with colors like to what is actually in my living elbow room . I used mostly the lasso selection puppet to select areas and used the brushwood tool on color to ‘ paint by numbers ’ .

Green Flutter
As a difficult shaver in Mrs. Sherlock ’s fourth level class at Herndon Elementary School ( circa 1979 ) , I was designate a report on John James Audobon . Being the ADHD individual that I was at the clock time , I got sidetracked read Audobon ’s Birds of America , while researching the man , by the prototype and information on the varied species of our aviary friends , particularly the Ruby Throated Hummingbird . uncalled-for to say my theme was not well received when the majority was about hummingbird and maybe a paragraph or two was about Mr. Audobon . For year I bid to see this mythical ( to me ) wight for real . at last , a few calendar month ago , I take in my first glance after my girlfriend installed a Hummingbird feeder in her back yard . I have photograph them on several occasions and decided that the astonishing lilliputian creature would be idealistic national matter for this challenge . I likely shot about 80 pics but settled on this one for the location of the bird on the right bringing a sorting of balance with the flora around the fence . I have included the original picture as well as the large and small colorized version . Sony SLT - A33 w/ a Minolta 70 - 210 F4.5 - 5.6 Lens , Max Aperture F5.6 , ISO 320 , color by layering the element and adjusting the curves in Photoshop .

The Pink House
I must admit this challenge brought me back to the good ol’ Day of uncomplicated school colouring . And as with the giant colour in books from my past , staying inside the lines is a must ! It did n’t help that I used a laptop with a racetrack - pad to select the objects to emblazon . I used my own place as the subject for this pic challenge . I chose pink for the theatre color to give it a 50’s/60 ’s vintage look . It ’s so funny to compare this colored rendering with the genuine affair . Its amazing how a little color can make such a difference . I think when my planetary house was first construct it must have front somewhat like this . possibly I ’ll paint the house back this way of life . I ’m certain the neighbors will hump me for it ! Nikon D3100 18 - 55 mm F/3.5 - 5.6 G electron lens , ISO 1600 , F/11

Broken Buddhas
I was traveling in southeastern United States Sri Lanka when we follow across a modest collection of broken buddhas just outside the Tissa Maha Dagoba — at 3rd hundred BC buddhist stupa . Apparently , if you receive a Gautama Siddhartha statue from a berth of worship and it is later damaged , you are suppose to order the damaged statue back near the site ( or under a Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree ) . This custom caused the tope to have an odd collection of broken buddhas just outside the proper temple . I photographed them with moderately standard setting ( iso 100 , 38 mm , f5 , on a Nikon d3000s ) , and mitt - colorise the image using a combo of the technique listed in the competition ( masking and house painting / erasing ) . I also lend some noise to make the image look more period of time specific .

Crayola Birds
I admit several pictures of blue jay wipe out goldfish in my backyard using a remote initiation android app and my laptop plug into my canon eos rebel T2i . Then I exact the images and cut out each shuttle with a feathered selection and put them on one taken with no birds . Then I carry through that look-alike and 2 other variations of the persona with -2 photograph and +2 photograph adjustment layer in photoshop . Then I used the HDR merge pro automation in photoshop and cranked the vibrancy to hell . Then I desaturated it and hired hand - color the birds and set the level to soft light . I used the original bird show that I made before i pseudo HDR’d it and messed with it until I could use it for it ’s color information without append too much item . I set that level to darken and thresh a ardent photo filter on it to call it a 24-hour interval . All in all , I ’m pretty certain that there were n’t really more than 2 dissimilar snort the whole metre but the process was fun and I feel good about the picture , and in the end , is n’t that what it ’s all about ? This is like the 4th day I ’ve had my first dslr . I was so glad when I got it that I call my mom to tell her that I could enter gizmodo shooting challenges now . She did n’t know or handle but I was very excited . Beats the crap out of my casio exilim 8.1MP ^.^ options : f/6.3 , 1/50 sec . , ISO-400

There were n’t a net ton of entries this hebdomad , but boy was this one tough to pronounce . ‘ Mirror Finish ’ and ‘ Tubbalicious ’ both exemplify how much data our center / brains process simply through tonal range ( the pitch blackness to white gradient of a photo ) unrelated to color at all , and just how various this proficiency could be in photos that you do n’t even count vintage .
